General Information

17 Again, a comedy from New Line Cinema starring Zac Efron, Matthew Perry, Leslie Mann, Thomas Lennon, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Sterling Knight, and directed by Burr Steers, was released in the United States on April 17, 2009.

Plot

Twenty years ago, Mike O'Donnell (Zac Efron) was a star basketball player in his senior year at Hayden High School, with a scout from Syracuse University seeking him for a possible scholarship. When his girlfriend, Scarlet (Allison Miller) tells him she is pregnant just before he goes on the court for his last game, Mike does what he believes is an act of responsibility, and gives up his chance for a scholarship.

Now, in the present, Mike (Matthew Perry) is 37 and living in L.A. with his geeky, software millionaire and best friend Ned Gold (Thomas Lennon). With his marriage in a total shambles to Scarlet (Leslie Mann), who is tired of his constant regrets from his past, she decides to file for divorce. Mike's two children, daughter Maggie (Michelle Trachtenberg), and son Alex (Sterling Knight), want little to do with him.

When Mike fails to get a promotion at work, he decides to return to his high school to reminisce about better days. Encountering an old man that he had believed to be the high school janitor (Brian Doyle-Murray), he is suddenly transformed into his 17-year-old self. Mike believes that this is an opportunity to live the life he always wanted. With Ned pretending to be his father, Mike returns to high school under the name "Mark Gold." There, he discovers that his Maggie is being pressured to have sex by her basketball-captain boyfriend Stan (Hunter Parrish), who also happens to be bullying his son Alex. Mike, now, makes a decision that his real mission is to help his children, and begins working with Alex to help him realize his own potential, and with Maggie to keep her from ruining her future.

Will 17 year-old Mike realize that the regrets of 37 year-old Mike have seriously affected his family and his marriage? Is it too late for him to connect with his children, and make a difference in their lives? And, what about his marriage to Scarlet, is it also too late to save it?

Biography of Makoto Shinkai

Makoto Shinkai was born Makoto Niitsu on February 9, 1973, and his hometown is Nagano, Japan. He studied Japanese literature as a university student. In interviews, Shinkai has stated that he traces his passion for creation to the manga and anime he had exposure to as a middle school student. Shinkai has also been quoted as saying that Hayao Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky is his favorite anime.

Shinkai started out as a graphic designer for a video game company called Falcom. In 1999, Shinkai released his five-minute monochromatic animated short, “She and Her Cat.” Shinkai provided the voice for the cat, and his fiancee, Mika Shinohara, provided the voice for the cat’s owner. The short ended up winning several awards, including the grand prize at the 2000 DoGA Animation contest.

Shinkai has another early work called Other Worlds, which he animated and directed. This black and white piece is under two minutes in length, and it features a man and a woman talking about their relationship.

In June 2000, Shinkai drew a picture of a girl in a cockpit holding a cell phone. This picture became the inspiration for his next work, Voices of a Distant Star. Later, Mangazoo contacted Shinkai and gave him a grant to turn Voices of a Distant Star into an anime they could sell. In May 2001, Shinkai quit his job at Falcom, and began working on Voices of a Distant Star. Shinkai provided a voice in the original cut of the project, but his voice was replaced in the final product. Shinkai’s fiancee provided the voice for Mikako, the main female character in Voices of a Distant Star, in the original cut of the project. This OVA was released on February 2, 2002.

In 2003, Shinkai directed an anime music video for a song called “Egao,” which features a girl and her pet hamster. In 2004, Shinkai did some CG work on Wind: A Breath of Heart.

Shinkai’s next major project was the feature-length film, The Place Promised in Our Early Days. The film was released to Japanese theaters on November 20, 2004. This was followed by 5 Centimeters per Second, which was released on March 3, 2007. Also in 2007, Shinkai directed a promotional piece for Neko no Shukai.

Besides the work he is best known for, Shinkai has also done animation for commercials, and he assists in animating visual novel opening movies for a company called Minori.

Fast, hot cars, half dressed women, and Vin Diesel are the foundation of this franchise of films with similar names and storylines. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), The Fast and the Furious (2001). Gotta love those deep title variations.

The opening scene of this year’s Fast & Furious, which can also be partially viewed in the promotional trailer, offers action enough for the entire film. The scene features a gasoline tanker being hijacked in the Dominican Republic, which is wrong and against the law, but of course the leader of the hijackers is Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), and so he is immediately forgiven for his non-law abiding behavior. The gasoline tanker scene is really heart pounding, and full of suspense mainly because Letty (Michelle Rodriquez), Dom’s girl, is tossed around like a rag doll between a moving tanker and a moving sports car.

In addition to all four of the main characters from the first film reuniting, another Fast & Furious highlight is the street racing scene, Paul Walker has returned as Brian O’Conner, Dominic and several other self- proclaimed hot shot drivers race through the streets to compete for a few paid driving positions with a local drug Lord. The street race takes place at a pace that seems to be real, and is reminiscent of the speedy cars that have tried to mow you down on the streets and highways.

In spite of the cheesy club scenes, where half naked women are kissing one another, and a cheesier “reunited” sex scene on the kitchen counter between parted lovers O’Conner and Diesel’s sister Mia (Jordana Brewster), this Fast & Furious has a story line that has a bit of substance, and possibly a new twist on an old issue. The film depicts some of the creative ways that the dealers run drugs between Mexico and the United States. Once again, the American border patrol officers are featured, as not really doing their job….as if we didn’t know that is happening.

The best part of having our boys back, is the realization that they can make 15 more Fast & Furious variation movies and we will still flock to them. Why? The easier question is this: hot men and women, beautiful cars, lots of heart stopping speed? Why not?

Yet another summer prequel, Star Trek shows us how the crew loved, copied and worshipped by many came to exist on the U.S.S. Enterprise. Abrams is the puppet master of the new generation of media viewers has placed his fingerprints, puppet strings and footprints all over the Star Trek franchise. Lucky us!

The existence of man kind is at stake, as an emotion-challenged, responsible, logical young Spock and a wild, “if it feels good do it” brilliant young Kirk, put their personal differences aside to battle evil. Eric Bana is their cruel nemesis Nero. The loss of his species and the woman he loved fuels Nero’s determination to destroy most anything living in the galaxy.

Leonard Nimoy plays a strong character role as Spock Prime, and he has a inventive storyline. Don’t, however, expect a surprise cameo from the original James T. Kirk, because it does not happen. And that is a shame, because this would have been the proper vehicle with a perfect “time machine” type plot, which would facilitate the appearance of the original Captain Kirk.
Zoë Saldana is the beautiful, sexy brainiac that every man wants on the Enterprise desires, and so she chooses the one who barely notices her, and surprising lover indeed! A sign of the times, the Star Trek franchise has always been culturally forward, but Saldana’s Uhura with her culture, intelligence and sexy beauty should be used as a model for all of the leading lady roles in all Hollywood films.

Key to the strength of Star Trek is a riveting cast, though some of the selections are curious. For instance, it has been a long while since the infamous Wynona Rider has made a noteworthy film, and it is strange seeing her cameo as Spock’s mother. Another somewhat awkward participant is Tyler Perry. A seasoned actor, and Hollywood force as a writer and director, Perry seems out of place and a little stuffy in his Star Trek role. These are observations are diminutive and don’t affect the quality of the Star Trek experience.

If pressed to actually complain, one might wonder what became of young Kirk’s biological mother, all we can deduce about her is that she remarried and wasn’t around during the rebellious young Kirk’s early years. Who knows? Maybe they are saving the details of mama Kirk’s life for the sequel to the prequel.
